PROCESS OF BUILDING A WINDOW:

The process or manufacturing starts with the idea and design. A scale drawing is made when the choice of design has been agreed upon. A full scale pattern is then made and this is used to build on.

The individual pieces of glass are then cut and joined together with the channel (came) of choice or copper foil. This example is lead came.

When all the pieces of glass are together , it is soldered together on both sides.

Next , the whole piece is puttied and then whiting is used to clean the glass and harden the putty. Black putty is used to darken the lead (if lead is being used) or a natural putty is used with the zinc and brass or with lead if natural lead is desired. Then it dries and afterwards is cleaned. The picture below shows the whiting used to harden the putty and also clean the glass. It is taken off after use.

The piece can be sealed between two pieces of glass ( tempered if necessary ) or left as a single pane. When it is sealed between the two panes of glass it becomes weatherproof which helps protect it.

PROCESS OF BUILDING OF A 6' DOME :

The structure for the 6 ft dome that was built by Class Glass started with a design that was to imitate the pattern of the tiles on the floor below the dome.

Then the custom made steel angle iron structure was manufactured on Class Glass premises to form the dome and hold the individual sections together.

The individual pieces were cut and made into the sections and then placed on a specially made frames both convex and concave. Then they were soldered together and coloured with black patina.

The frame and sections were transported to the site and assembled on site.

The finished piece. It compliments the tile directly under the dome.

REPAIRS AND RESTORATIONS:

This very old window is in need of repairs/restorations. The customer brought it in rough shape!

The window needs to be rebuilt and many pieces replaced.

The final restoration/repair :

We can fix your old windows but there is sometimes that we cannot match the very old glass and have to substitute a little different type or colour of glass.

We do our best to make it as close to the original as possible.

SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT:

THE IRON WORKINGS OF CLASS GLASS:

Never saying no to a challenge, Class Glass took on the  manufacturing of an iron door for a customer's wine room. The customer wanted something that looked old and rustic, rusty and no weld joints showing. The final door will also have glass in it. As of this writing the door is not quite done, but will post final door in place when it is done.

This is the beginning of the frame. Not rusty yet. You can see the work that was put into it with all the rivets and all the distressed look.

You can see a bit of the rust coming on to the metal. It is an art to get it to rust "artistically" and "natural -looking".

You can see some of the detail in this picture. Lots of plasma cutting, welding and bashing.

The metal is being stressed to begin to rust. The whole thing will be flat clear coated to stop the rust and also to protect.

This is the framework of the wine room door completed and ready to be shipped. It is rusted and clearcoated.

COME BACK AT A LATER TIME TO SEE THE FINAL DOOR COMPLETED!!
